The future of summer camp food service
Camp kitchens carry more operational load than almost any other part of camp. What purpose-built software changes, and why it matters beyond the kitchen.
The dining hall is where a camp comes together three times a day. It is also where a remarkable amount of operational pressure lands: dietary requirements to get right, a budget that does not move, procurement to manage, and a team that largely turns over every year.
Most camps run all of that on spreadsheets and institutional memory. It works until the person holding the memory leaves. Anyone working in summer camp food service will recognise the pattern.
What camps are actually up against
Four things recur everywhere, regardless of size:
- Dietary and allergen requirements that have to be correct every single service
- Food budgets under sustained pressure
- Procurement that has to be planned weeks out to be affordable
- Seasonal staffing, which means the operation is taught from scratch each June
None of these are cooking problems. They are systems problems, which is why better recipes alone never quite fix them.
Where purpose-built tools help
Restaurant software assumes à la carte tickets and a stable team. Camp is a fixed roster, three services a day, and a new crew each season, so the tooling has to be built around session planning and continuity instead.
In practice that means recipes that scale to any headcount without recalculation, allergen information attached to ingredients so it flows through to every menu, live inventory that reflects what was actually produced, and one place where the kitchen and the office are looking at the same numbers.
Why it matters past the kitchen
Money not lost to waste is money available for programming. Time not spent rebuilding menus is time spent on food.
And when the system holds the knowledge rather than an individual, next season starts from where this one finished, which is the difference between improving year over year and starting again every June.
